Two floors worth of elderly residents were evacuated from Royal Towers at 20800 Wyoming in Royal Oak Township at about 2am on Saturday.
According to Ferndale Fire Marshal Brian Batten, the fire started on the third floor, and “was caused by someone carelessly disposing of a cigarette into storage on the outside deck. The fire extended into the apartment and to the fourth floor deck above.”
Batten said that the only injury was a State Trooper who suffered some smoke inhalation during the initial evacuation. “I am told he was treated at a nearby hospital and released with no further complications,” Batten said. Damages are estimated at approximately $30,000.
The residents have been able to return to their homes.
The building has 11 stories. Ferndale Fire Department is contracted to provide fire and rescue service for Royal Oak Township.
