Hazel Park Warehouse Home of Large Retail Fraud Ring
(Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, April 9, 2014)
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) has arrested five individuals that were part of a major retail fraud ring in Hazel Park that led to the recovery of over $3 million in stolen merchandise.
NET investigators received a tip in February 2014, that indicated that these individuals were selling large amounts of pseudoephedrine to other parties and were possibly involved with the manufacturing of methamphetamine.
It was revealed through NET investigations that these subjects were not involved with pseudoephedrine or meth production, but were in fact involved with an organized retail fraud ring operating throughout Southeast Michigan. This organization used groups to conduct mass retail frauds at numerous CVS and Walgreen’s stores. The ring stole as much as $15,000 dollars of merchandise per day. After additional intelligence was gathered, it was revealed that the organization stored the merchandise at a warehouse in the City of Hazel Park. From the warehouse, the stolen goods were then marketed and sold online, at a variety of online retailers including eBay and Amazon.
On March 19th, 2014, NET obtained search warrants and began gathering more information about the members of the organized retail fraud ring. NET investigators observed the suspected individuals commit retail frauds at numerous CVS and Walgreen’s stores, resulting in the arrest of five individuals. A search of the suspects’ vehicle revealed over $9,000 dollars of stolen goods.
Once the subjects were in custody, a search warrant was conducted at the warehouse location in Hazel Park. A search of the warehouse revealed approximately $3 million dollars of Victoria’s Secret merchandise, $30,000 dollars of CVS and Walgreen’s merchandise, $75,000 in U.S. currency, and $10,000 in various other name brand products were discovered.
