Shoplifting, Scissor Attack and Toy Pistol at Walmart Lead to 12 and 20 Year Olds Being Charged

INCIDENT: 23:12 hrs. March 12, 2014 – City of Rochester Hills Retail Fraud / Felonious Assault #14-035991
SUMMARY: Deputies were dispatched to Walmart on Adams Road to investigate a Retail Fraud in progress. One subject was in Loss Prevention custody but was not cooperative. While en route to the scene dispatch advised deputies that both subjects had left Walmart in a purple Durango. Dispatch also relayed a gun was used in some fashion during the incident. Deputies located the vehicle in the area and a traffic stop was initiated.
It was determined that one of the suspects attempted to steal merchandise from Walmart and was escorted to the Loss Prevention office. While in the office that suspect grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened to kill Loss Prevention Officers. The suspect fled the office with the scissors and threw them to the ground just before exiting Walmart. While being followed by the Walmart managers into the parking lot a second subject exited the Dodge Durango with what appeared to be a black pistol. At that point the Walmart employees backed away and stopped following the two suspects.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Suspect age 20 years was taken into custody for Retail Fraud 1 and Felonious Assault (for threats made with scissors). The second subject it was determined to be 12 years old. Contact was made with Children’s Village and it was determined the 12 year old suspect could be released to his mother pending possible a juvenile petition. A petition for Felonious Assault was filed against the 12 year old suspect for actions taken with the pistol. The pistol was located in the vehicle at the time of the stop and it was determined to be a toy Airsoft gun. The 20 yr. old suspect was lodged in the Oakland County Jail pending issuance of a warrant by the Prosecutor’s Office. The incident was reported to Child Protective Services.
