On Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, Royal Oak officers attempted to stop a red Dodge Avenger for a traffic violation in the area of E. Sixth Street and Knowles. The driver of the Avenger refused to stop the vehicle; he fled from the officers to a residential driveway in the 800 block of Knowles.

Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver quickly exited and ran into a house. Officers recognized the driver as Darren Truman, who resides on Knowles. Since his identity had been positively established, officers impounded his vehicle and decided to seek an out of custody warrant for his arrest.


The Criminal Investigations Division received a warrant for Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer and thank you raymond robertsDriving While License Suspended-Second Offense.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, Royal Oak officers tracked down Truman’s whereabouts to the 2600 block of Wakefield, in the city of Berkley. Royal Oak and Berkley officers went to the Wakefield address and arrested him without incident.

While in custody and being interviewed by Detective Tim Wood, Truman confessed to an additional crime, Malicious Destruction of Property (MDOP). The MDOP was committed on Dec. 3, 2013, in the 1100 block of S. Washington, in the city of Royal Oak. In this incident, Truman maliciously damaged a parked vehicle that he believed looked similar to one he had a road rage incident with earlier in the day.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, Truman was arraigned on the following charges; Fleeing and Eluding – Third Degree (felony-not more than 5 years and/or a fine of not more than $1,000), Driving While License pride2014adSuspended-Second Offense (misdemeanor-not more than 1 year and/or a fine of not more than $1,000), Malicious Destruction of Property- $1,000 Or More But Less Than $20,000 (felony-not more than 5 years and/or a fine of not more than $10,000.00 or 3 times the amount of the destruction, whichever is greater).

He was arraigned by the Honorable Judge Derek Meinecke from the 44th District Court.

Bond was set at $5,000, no 10%. The next scheduled 44th District Court date is set for Feb. 7, 2014, at 09: 00 a.m., in front of the Honorable Terrence Brennan.
