“Kindness towards a stranger can be an act of peace,” said Rebecca Phoenix.  The 17-year-old Ferndale High School Junior believes so deeply in the power of peace that she’s planning to go to Hiroshima Peace Park and put 1,000 paper cranes on the Sadako statue located there.  She is raising money through Indiegogo to make her dream possible, giving donors the chance to have their name on the cranes and personalized pictures.

“Sadako’s message for world peace really resonated with me and since then I was inspired to become part of an up-standers anti bullying program in my school and have volunteered with children.  I have also DENGATE _Fern115_Adchosen Japanese as my chosen foreign language of study and am in my second year,” Phoenix said.  “When the opportunity to join a group of students in Japan to visit the Hiroshima Peace Park and study the Japanese culture in a 14 day trip, I became focused on fulfilling my dream. I got a job, am selling my personal belongings and am doing weekly can drives. I do bake sales in my school and selling candy to my classmates but the cost of the trip is beyond what I can achieve on my own financially.”

Students from Ferndale Schools are going, as well as from CASA.  Phoenix said any money she raises beyond her costs will go to help the other students.

“I believe that it is human nature to easily forget what peace means and how powerful it can be,” Phoenix sidebar016growsaid.  “I want it to be possible for all of us to get to a state of peace but argument and disagreement are like a powerful drug, so while I want the world to achieve a state of peace I would settle for a compromise of not blowing each-other up. I would like to inherit a world that is going forward in all categories not just science or math but in human relations, not the politics that have become outdated and create more harm than good.”

In addition to advocating for peace, Phoenix is a stage manager for musicals and plays at FHS and is in the marching band.
