(City of Ferndale Press Release, Jan.7 , 2014)
Southeast Michigan temperatures have now dropped to record lows, and people who have to be out in it have been warned to limit their time outdoors, wear several layers of clothing, and cover up as much as possible to avoid frostbite. Hypothermia is another risk. The City reminds people who need a short break from the cold to drop by the HowesLocationKulick Community Center on Tuesday or Wednesday between 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Given this deep freeze, with temperatures dropping so low, Ferndale first responders will treat all 911 calls for medical assistance as life-threatening emergencies.  Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan stated: “Don’t hesitate to call 911 if your or someone you know loses heat in the middle of the night, the furnace goes out, what have you.  These are life threatening events that warrant a call to 911 in subzero temperatures.”lori voikos thank you
According to the Facebook page of Botsford Hospital, Community EMS, a component of Botsford Hospital is encouraging you to phone its call center toll-free at 800-343-4427 if you see a homeless person in need of help or anyone in distress, said Greg Beauchemin, president and CEO of Community EMS. Dispatchers at the call center will send their rehab unit or an ambulance to help the person in need.
The rehab unit is a special 20-person medical unit that can provide medical care, aid and comfort (blankets, jackets, coffee, warmth and escape from the elements) to homeless people throughout metro Detroit. Community EMS is part of Botsford Health Care.
