Finnegan’s Monsters are Invading Ferndale!
(Jacki Smith, owner of Candle Wick Shop, Dec. 7, 2013)
Home by home, room by room, child by child, monsters are invading! Finnegan’s Monsters! Don’t worry, these adorable, handmade plush monsters by Finnegan Mueller are the kind of monster Ferndale, MI likes. He is making a special, friendly batch that will be available at the Candle Wick Shop on Dec 14th during the Holiday Ice Festival.
Finnegan, Finn to all of his friends, is a 5th grader in the Ferndale schools and his growing collection of monstrous creations can be found all around the metro area and beyond. Selling only from his Finnegan’s Monsters Facebook page; family and friends are snatching up as many as he can make to give as the perfect holiday treat. Each monster has a unique story that helps you get to know your special guy; Willie the super duper shy monster always carries 2 toy cars, one for him and one for his invisible friend. Claudia is a cheerleader without rhythm who yells too loud. Daisy is a girly girl who loves pink and sparkles, but is no cream puff.
Finnegan’s Monsters is a family affair as each creature is hand sewn and each face hand painted. Fin’s #1 helper is Mom, Nan Kerr-Mueller. It was Nan’s creation of a “stuffie” for a new family member that inspired Finn to create his own version. His father, Chris Mueller immediately dubbed them “Finnegan’s Monsters”. Recently Finn has taken to subcontracting some of the construction out to his brother Connor, who is not only happy to help, but happy to get paid for his work! After each monster is completed, the family gathers to tell the tale of monster and record it for the new family the monster will be going to.
This isn’t Finn’s first foray into entrepreneurship or into sewing. Finn starting sewing around 3 years old, taking after his Mom’s love of creating. In 2012, Finn also had a table at the Ferndale PTA craft fair where he sold fun pencils and many unique items of his own creations. The latest generation of creativity is just the next step on his self-made journey.
To get one of Finnegan’s Monsters, stop by his Facebook page and send him a message with your order. On Saturday Dec 14th you can also find a collection of Finnegan’s monsters at the Candle Wick Shop (195 W 9 Mile Rd) during the Holiday Festival in Ferndale.
