Ferndale Considering Council Meeting Time Change
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Dec. 7, 2013)
The Ferndale City Council is considering moving meetings to earlier in the evening, and is looking for public input on that potential change. The City’s website now has a survey where residents can chose between 6:30pm, 7pm, and 7:30pm for their preferred meeting time.
“We’ve heard over the years that an earlier start time might be more convenient. If getting home a little sooner from a Council meeting is helpful to residents then that’s a good thing, and that’s why we’re asking. It’s a relatively minor change but I always want us to be open to new ideas that could make local government work better for people,” said Mayor Dave Coulter.
At least 16 other communities in Oakland County have their council, commission or township boards start at 7pm, including Oak Park, Berkley, Hazel Park, Novi and Lathrup Village.
15 could be identified to have 7:30pm start times, including Ferndale, Royal Oak, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods and Clawson.
As for earlier times, Oxford starts their meetings at 6:30pm, while Pontiac and Waterford meetings begin at 6pm.
As of Saturday night, 39% of respondents wanted a 6:30pm start time, 28% wanted 7pm, and 33% wanted to keep it at 7:30pm. To cast your vote and see the most current results, go to http://ferndalemi.gov/Government/City_Council.
