(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 6, 2013)
Election Day is over and in cities across Oakland County candidates are dealing with the wins and losses of the democratic process. For most of the Mayors facing re-election, the night was an easy one though, since most ran unopposed.
Returning to their seats are: Phil O’Dwyer of Berkley, Penny Luebs of Clawson, Barry Brickner of Farmington Hills, Edward Swanson of Madison Heights, Christopher Johnson of Northville, Jim Ellison of Royal Oak, Tedd Wallace of South Lyon, Brenda Lawrence of Southfield and Linda Ackler of Walled Lake.
Marrian McClellan of Oak Park was also technically unopposed, but a last minute write-in campaign by former mayor Gerald E. Naftaly did provide a challenge. McClellan got 68.56% of the votes, while write-in candidates got 31.44%.
In Ferndale voters faced a choice between four candidates. Mayor Dave Coulter will retain his seat for another term, having beaten second choice candidate and former Mayor Craig Covey by 497 votes. Coulter earned 1634 (47.67%). Covey earned 1137 (33.17%). Newcomer Linda Parton earned 335 (9.77%), and Sherry Wells earned 310 (9.04%). There were also 12 write in votes, accounting for (.35%). The total number of voters for Mayor was 3428.
In Pleasant Ridge a close race was held between Kurt Metzger and Frank Rubino. Ultimately Metzger won with 52.6% of the vote. Rubino earned 47.24%.
Pontiac’s Deidre Waterman had a bigger victory, gaining 68.2% of the vote. Her opponent Leon Jukowski got 30.46%.
Several cities had ballot questions, bond votes, council elections and library board elections.
Royal Oak is celebrating the passage of a Human Rights Ordinance banning discrimination against lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender individuals. Ferndale passed an ordinance to legalize a small amount of marijuana for adults age 21 and up on private property. And Clawson residents approved a rubbish tax.
