(C. Proxmire, Oct. 22, 2013)

SOCRRA [Southeast Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority] is getting ready for America Recycles 2013 by reaching out to area groups and inviting them to come in for tours of their Troy-based sorting facility.

There they take plastic, metal, paper, and other recyclable items to be cleaned, sorted, packaged and sold.  The program serves Berkley, Beverly Hills, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Sherry Wells for Mayor adLathrup Village, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, and Troy.  Not only does the recycling help reduce landfill usage, it helps communities offset the cost of trash collection because of the value of the materials collected.

Kids and adults alike are impressed by the large, busy facility with its conveyer belts and sorting areas.  There is also a recycling classroom, with presentations geared toward various age groups.

Half hour tours are available for youth groups, civic leaders, service organizations, businesses and others who want to know more about how recycling in their community works.  America Recycles is a national initiative to encourage this.

Available tour times are:

Tues, Nov 12 – 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m.

Thurs, Nov 14 – 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m.richard gage ad
