Royal Oak Police Report: Baby in Motel Died of Malnourishment
(Lieutenant David Clemens, Royal Oak Police Dept, Oct 4, 2013)
On February 4, 2013, the Royal Oak Police Department responded to the Seville Motel located at 28300 Woodward on a report of a two month old baby not breathing.
Officers arrived on the scene and found the baby, Gabrielle Taylor, unresponsive.
A Royal Oak police officer began CPR on the infant until Royal Oak Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene. The Royal Oak Fire Department transported the infant to William Beaumont Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation conducted by the Royal Oak Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause of death was a complication of bronchopneumonia and malnourishment.
On September 27, 2013 the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for the arrest of Destiny Thomas, the infant’s mother. She was charged with one (1) count of Child Abuse 2nd degree and one (1) count of Child Abuse 4th Degree. Royal Oak Police Detectives located Thomas at her residence in Royal Oak Township where she was taken into custody without incident.
On Thursday, October 2, 2013, Destiny Thomas was arraigned on the charges in the 44th District Court. The Honorable Judge Brennan set bond at $50,000.00. The next hearing date is set for October 11, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.
