Public House is Ferndale’s Newest Hit
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 28, 2013)
With quirky sandwiches that are both adorable and affordable, daily cotton candy flavors, nontraditional deviled eggs and booze-based milkshakes, Ferndale’s newest bar and restaurant Public House seems destined for success.
Created by Imperial Founder Jeff King, Public House opened last week at W. 9 Mile, a cozy location that once housed Josephine Bistro. The space is completely remodeled, with a garage door style front that gives a more open feel and custom iron work booths with marbled table tops. The music comes from a record player behind the bar.
Drinks are custom creations, as are the fist-sized sandwiches. Offerings include buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with pimento cheese, pickle and jalapeño, duck with apple kimchi, ssamjang sauce and Bibb lettuce, and pastrami with brown mustard, Swiss cheese and cucumber pickle. There are also vegan choices, and those who want gluten-free options can ask for their sandwich to be made with a lettuce wrap instead of a bun.
Chris Hughes of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority is excited to see another restaurant move into the location. “I have yet to find any don’t likes. So far I have had the deviled eggs, the onions, the Public House Burger, the Public House Pastrami– haven’t met a Public House offering that I didn’t like or didn’t want to try! Also, I love the idea of putting cotton candy on the menu. That’s Jeff King kind of crazy genius,” Hughes said.
