Governor’s Council Endorses The DIY 5k “Art on the Run”
(DIY Press Release, Sept. 6, 2013)
The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has recognized The DIY 5k “Art on the Run” as a quality physical activity event. As a result, The DIY 5k will be included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program.
This unique 5k run and 1 mile fun run boasts huge canvases along the race route where participants can make optional quick stops and contribute to giant themed works of art. The 2nd annual DIY 5k run kicks off on Saturday, September 14 at 9am and will benefit the visual art programs in Ferndale Public Schools.
The Pure Michigan FITness Series endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization’s ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents. The DIY 5k “Art on the Run” exemplifies this core value and is endorsed by the Governor’s Council.
“By endorsing local events all across the state, we hope to bring attention to the importance of physical activity and encourage our citizens to take responsibility for their health,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council. “These local events can have a tremendous impact on health care costs that present a significant challenge for our state’s economy.”
“In the end we will have 7 communal masterpieces! It’s wonderful getting people together for the run and doing art to benefit the art programs in the Ferndale School District. It’s all about community and fun and everyone wins”, said Krista Johnston, co-organizer of the event.
In order to become an endorsed event, an organization must complete an application form for review. Some criteria that is taken into consideration includes providing a positive, safe physical activity experience using qualified officials and benefiting a nonprofit or charitable organization.
This unique 5k run and 1 mile fun run boasts huge canvases along the race route where participants can make optional quick stops and contribute to giant themed works of art. Runners can take a brief pause at the Jackson Pollock-themed splatter canvas where they will be handed a brush and can give a quick flick. Multiply that by a few hundred runners and a community masterpiece is revealed. The DIY 5k “Art on the Run” and 1 Mile Fun Run has 7 different canvas themes and a few surprises too. Proceeds benefit Ferndale Public Schools’ visual arts programs.
The run, generously presented by Meijer and sponsored by Worry Free, will be loosely timed for those runners who want to track their pace. It’s all about community and fun! The 2nd annual DIY 5k run kicks off on Saturday, September 14 at 9am. The race will start and finish along East Troy St, one block south of Nine Mile behind Woodward Avenue Brewers.
