Three events in the next two months for persons interested in improving cycling and walking in Southeast Oakland:
1. S.E. Oakland Bike Map/Beaumont Bike to Work Day Friday May 17th.
Many people receiving this email participated in our mapping event at Royal Oak Public Library in December 2011. We collected ideas for safe biking routes in southeast Oakland County, aimed at helping people new to cycling find a safe way to get to various destinations.
The map is now being printed, thanks to contributions from the Oakland County Economic Development Department and Beaumont Hospital. It will be released to the public at Beaumont Hospital’s Bike to Work Day event on Friday, May 17th, and after that will be available at various locations (bike shops, schools, etc).
If you would like to help distribute the maps reply to RoyalOakBikes@hotmail.com.
If you would like more information about Beaumont Hospital’s Bike to Work Day please contact Matthew Farraday at firstname.lastname@example.org.
2. Bike Clinic Sunday May 19th 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm Royal Oak Farmer’s Market
The Royal Oak Community Coalition is holding its second annual Bike Clinic on Sunday, May 19th, 2pm – 4:30pm at the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market. The Community Coalition has a done a great job attracting bike shops (who are offering free repairs), vendors and supporters and planning fun events for kids. You can show your support for community biking events and encourage more just by attending this event.
3. Woodward Avenue Gran Fondo, Sunday June 30th, 8:00a m.
Dales Hughes has succeeded in organizing the first annual “Gran Fondo Bike-to-Bike Shop Rally” on Sunday, June 30th, 2013. The event will be a 54-mile bike ride visiting seven bike shops along Woodward Avenue from Detroit to Pontiac. These 7 bike shops will also serve as the 7 entry points for the ride, so for several hours there will be 7 huge groups of cyclists circling Woodward.
This event has the potential to grow into a marquee community biking event for the Detroit area. Years from now you will want to be able to say, “I attended the first one.” Don’t miss it!
