Memorial for Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach Unveiled
(C. Proxmire, April 29, 2013)
Family, friends and supporters of Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Leach gathered in Berkley on April 27 to honor his service by unveiling a memorial for him and a bench named for his son Jack. The memorials are at Berkley Legion at 2079 W. 12 Mile Road.
Leach died while serving in Afghanistan on June 26, 2012, leaving behind his Sarah and their son, who is less than one year old. Leach was part of 82nd Airborne Division. He was a Ferndale High School graduate and an honorary member of the Berkley Legion after serving as the Berkley Cruisefest Grand Marshall in 2011.
Following the dedication of the memorial, there was a pub crawl through Ferndale, with money going to a memorial fund, which will also help other military families in need. Those who would like to donate to the memorial fund can still send checks to SSG Matthew Leach Memorial Fund, 2079 W. 12 Mile, Berkley, MI 48072.
