Library Seeks Local Artists for Literature Inspired Exhibitionnicholas schrock allstate

“For the Love of Reading” is an art exhibition at the Ferndale Public Library celebrating books and literature’s ability to inspire. Held in concurrence with “Ferndale Reads” and “The Day of Books and Roses,” artwork will be on display from early March to late April in the library community meeting room and atriumArt inspired by books, including illustrations, character portraits, re-imagined book covers and more will be included in the show. Submissions in any variety of medium are encouraged, including photography, painting, drawing, relief prints, and sculpture. “Ferndale Reads” and “The Day of Books and Roses” are anticipated to draw hundreds of visitors to the library. “For the Love of Reading” will have its own reception.

Entries must be received no later than 11:59pm on Friday, February 15, 2013. Artists will receive notification 20121116rs_05_jack_millerof their submission status (accepted or declined) by February 22.

”Ferndale Reads” is the library’s annual community reading event. Copies of this year’s selection,Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, will be given away. “Ferndale Reads” demonstrates how reading, particularly as a group, elevates its value beyond a solitary recreation, allowing the community to come at the book together from various viewpoints.

“The Day of Books and Roses” is a library-hosted fundraising celebration inspired by “La Diada de Sant Jordi” (Saint George’s Day) on April 21st. The event features Spanish inspired foods, wine, and other treats. Michigan Authors will be reading from their work and selling their books. Friends of the Ferndale Library will use the funds raised to support FPL’s programming and events.

Correlating specifically with the “Day of Books and Roses” or Slaughterhouse Five is not mandatory for artwork’s inclusion in the exhibition.

The Committee does not charge a commission and will not be involved in themodern tax sale of any artwork beyond providing interested buyers with the artist’s provided contact information. Artists who sell work from the exhibit are encouraged to make a modest donation to the library.

The Art and Exhibitions Committee is also accepting submissions for future solo or collaborative shows in the Community Meeting/Atrium spaces. These proposals can include three-dimensional art, as well.

The Ferndale Public Library Art and Exhibitions Committee’s mission is to promote and foster an appreciation of two and three-dimensional art for library patrons, through exhibits, lectures, and an expanded collection of art books.
