Seniors Promote Cookbook at Taste Fest 2

The Ferndale Seniors really know how to cook, and on Monday, Oct. 29 they showed off their talent at a Senior Taste Fest held at the Ferndale Public Library. The Taste Fest was to help promote their cookbook and the most recent addendum.
The cookbook is $10 and was produced last year with help from Lenny’s Copy Center. The recipes come from seniors in the community and sales of the binder help fund Senior programming out of the Kulick Community Center. The group has twice-monthly meetings that often include birthday cake and usually an interesting speaker or presentation. Mayor Dave Coulter gave a “State of the City” talk earlier this month, and they’ve had a magician and a handwriting analysis expert among others. They also take short bus trips together, and they even used some of their money to buy a new electronic sign for the Kulick Center.
The recipes are designed with colorful borders and pictures and set it plastic sleeves and a three-ring binder so that people can also add in their own. The addendum is $5 and contains fifteen new recipes to go along with the book which was first sold in 2010.
The book contains many unique recipes like “Wacky Cake” from Virginia Saxton, who got the recipe from her grandmother who had written in on the back of their sewer bill receipt, which was $1.00 at the time. There is also one for Russian teacakes from Dorothy Gafke who used to make them with her mother. President Jeannie Davis also contributed to the collection – with a top secret family recipe for Buttermilk pie that she extracted from her daughter in law with the promise never to reveal it to anyone else.
The Taste Fest on the 29th was attended by seniors and visitors. Some memorable items were the split pea spread, squash, chicken lo mien and party meatballs. Those who were unable to attend can still purchase a cookbook by contacting Jeannie Davis at 248-541-5888.
