Turkey Vulture Visits Ferndale (video)
(C. Proxmire, Oct. 31, 2012)
When Claudia Lee Ivey and her son were driving down Burdette on Oct. 10, they were surprised to see a special visitor – a turkey vulture!
Fellow Ferndale resident Dick Willcock said he’s seen them around too. “They used to be around the storage yard a lot. They come from the zoo to look for food, but that’s where they tend to congregate.” He said that they are around for the summer, but fly south for the winter.
Wikipedia agrees. According to their map turkey vultures will come up to all areas of Michigan but migrate to south of Ohio in the cooler months.
Environmental entertainer Joe Reilly, who also visits Ferndale periodically, shared a song about these interesting creatures when he was here last December.
The buzzards may be flying south shortly, but they return like clockwork in March, stopping in Ohio for a favorite roosting spot. Find out more at http://www.clemetparks.com/events/buzzards.asp.
