Police Report:  Home Invasion Suspect Arrested in Redford, Homeowner who Defended Himself Not Charged

(Ferndale Police, Oct. 23, 2012)

On 10/19/12 at about 10:15 a.m., a resident on Edgewood in Ferndale found a man trying to break into his home through a bedroom window. The homeowner armed himself with a handgun and fired two shots at the burglar, but missed. The suspect then ran to a silver pick-up truck and fled in the truck. The homeowner fired two more shots at the fleeing suspect. The suspect escaped.

The truck used in the crime was reported stolen from the Oxbow company in Livonia.

On the evening of 10/21/12, Ferndale Police dispatch received a telephone call from a person who reported he saw the suspect pick-up truck at a Marathon Gas Station located in Redford near Telegraph and I96; the caller described the occupant of the truck. Ferndale Police called Redford Police who responded to the area and arrested the suspect. The suspect was then transferred to custody of the Ferndale Police Department.

The case has been presented for review by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s office for a determination of charges.

The suspect may be arraigned this afternoon.

SUSPECT:  Jeffrey Paul REIHER, w/m 32 years old.   Currently wanted as an absconder from parole.

“The homeowner acted within his rights and will not be charged. A person has the right to defend themselves with deadly force from a burglar entering their home,” Lt. William Wilson said.
