Mom who learned English in Ferndale Honored with Library Gift in her Name

(FPL Press Release, Oct. 19, 2012)

The Ferndale Public Library has received a generous donation from the children of Karen Fung Ping Mui.  The family requested that the donation be used to purchase English as a Second Language (ESL) materials to honor her memory.

The Mui family moved to the US from Hong Kong in 1968, and have been residents of Ferndale for the past 38 years.   Karen Fung Ping Mui was a very intelligent, hard working woman who raised six children who adored her.

To help her kids advance in life, she felt that it was important to gain US citizenship and learn the English language.  She took ESL classes from Ferndale Adult Education and loved the learning experience along with the friendship and camaraderie of her classmates. Her children are very proud of her hard work and commitment. They hope that the new ESL collection at the Ferndale Public Library will help carry on her passion for ESL and lifelong learning.

The new collection includes books, DVDs and audio CDs covering a variety of languages.  Subjects include Beginning English, Persuasive English for Job Seekers, and Citizenship.  The library’s reciprocal borrowing agreement with many area libraries, as well as their participation in the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) will allow widespread access to the collection.
