Car Thief Speeds Off, Crashes and Flees with Baby in His Arms
(Lt. William Wilson, Ferndale Police, Aug 22, 2012)
Vilary Renard REED (b/m, Detroit resident) is in custody after fleeing from police in a stolen car, crashing, and running from police while carrying a 21 month old baby in his arms.
Yesterday shortly before 6:00 p.m. a Ferndale Patrol Officer stopped Reed who was driving a stolen Crown Victoria on 8 Mile road. After bringing the car to a stop at 8 Mile / San Juan, Reed then accelerated and sped though Detroit side streets to escape the officer. Reed ran through stop signs, sped, and lost control and crashed at Pennington / Pembroke. When Reed emerged from the car, he was carrying a 21 month old baby boy in his arm. Reed ran from police while carrying the baby.
During his attempt to escape, Reed handed the boy to a woman standing in a yard, then continued to run. Police caught Reed running through residential yards. Officers recovered the boy from the woman transported him to the police station where the child was examined by Ferndale Fire Dept. paramedics. The child was later turned over to his mother.
Reed is reportedly not the father, but was baby-sitting the child when the incident occurred.
The case will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office for a determination of charges. Reed will likely be arraigned this afternoon.
Reed is currently on parole for a conviction of Fleeing and Eluding and has previous convictions for Receiving and Concealing stolen vehicles.
