Inside Out: DIA Artwork Comes to Ferndale
(Adapted from DIA Press Release, June 27, 2012)
The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has named participating communities for the next round of Inside|Out, which brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets and parks of metro Detroit. The reproductions for this round will be on view from July 3 to Sept. 30. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is sponsoring the program for 2012 and 2013. Ferndale has six pieces up around Downtown, which is also a perfect tie-in to the on-going ARTWN theme.
An official unveiling will take place as part of ARTWN – the Event, a $50 a ticket fundraising event based at the Rust Belt and giving a tour of art in the community. That event takes place June 28.
“This is one of many ways the DIA serves the community,” said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director. “We’re glad to be continuing our third year of the extremely popular Inside|Out program, and we look forward to 2013.”
Ferndale’s six reproductions are clustered within walking or bike-riding distance of each other. Locations are featured on an interactive map on the DIA’s website, www.dia.org/insideout.
Inside|Out will be in five new cities this summer: Clawson, Garden City, Trenton, Troy and Waterford. Although the other eight communities have participated in the program before, the reproductions will be placed in different locations to maintain the element of surprise of seeing the artwork in unexpected settings.
The DIA will offer free museum admission to a Family Sunday for residents of participating communities. This will encourage them to come to the DIA to experience “their” works of art in person and enjoy the variety of activities the museum offers.
Participating communities, with their free days noted, are:
· Canton July 15
· Troy July 22
· Dearborn July 29
· Waterford August 5
· Garden City August 19
· Trenton August 19
· Royal Oak August 26
· Ferndale August 26
· Clawson August 26
· Clinton Township September 16
· Harrison Township September 16
· Northville September 23
· Detroit September 30
The DIA has an Inside|Out Facebook page, where Facebook users can interact with each other online and share their Inside|Out experiences through messages, photos, videos and more. To utilize the Inside|Out Facebook page, visit www.facebook.com/dia.insideout and “Like” the page.
