David Michael Smith Scholarship Winners
(Ferndale 115 News, June 24, 2012)
Among the many scholarships that are awarded in our community each year are the David Michael Smith Scholarships. The $500 awards are given to a male and a female student in memory of the Smith’s son David, who was passed away on June 29, 2006. The 16-year-old was attempting to place a quarter on the train tracks when he was fatally struck.
The scholarship is a way for the Smith’s to encourage other young people in the community, a way to remind young people to not play around train tracks, and a way to honor their son. This year Jillian Rossman and Darious Alvis, Jr. were the selected recipients.
Ferndale Youth Assistance helps administer the scholarship fund, and fundraisers are held throughout the year.
