Ferndale Schools Celebrate 525 Graduates in 2012

As the school year ends, so does the high school career for 525 Ferndale Schools graduates who earned their diplomas this year. Ferndale High School graduated 195 students, University High School graduated 90 students, and Adult & Alternative Education graduated 240 students.
As in past years, the graduates are celebrating extraordinary scholarly successes. At Ferndale High School, the Class of 2012 earned a total of $3,346,397 in scholarships, the highest figure ever. University High School’s grads earned
$715,232. Those pursuing college degrees from the Adult and Alternative Education program earned $6,000 in scholarships.
Ferndale High School’s college acceptances included all of the Michigan state universities (including 7 FHS grads heading to U of M, and 6 to MSU), plus out-of-state destinations including: Central State University, Ashbury University, Alabama A & M, Albany State University, DePaul University, Heidelberg University, Wilberforce University, Alabama State University, Loyola University, and Carson Newman University.
FHS Athletes who earned scholarships were Kelsey Wilson to play volleyball at University of Akron, and Lexie Brisson-Fast to play soccer at Saginaw Valley State University. Christina Marshall won the Western Golf Association Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship which will cover her room and board at MSU. 
University High School graduates will be attending the following colleges next fall: Alabama State University, Bethune-Cookman University, Bowling Green State University (7); Central Michigan University; Culinary Institute of America; Eastern Michigan University (4): Ferris State University; Grand Valley State University; Hampton University; Kettering University; Michigan State University (6); Morgan State University; New York University; North Carolina A & T State University; Oakland University (4); Saginaw Valley State University; Temple University; University of Detroit; University of Michigan; University of Michigan – Dearborn; University of Michigan – Flint; Wayne State University (8); Western Michigan University (9); the U.S. Navy and several community colleges.
Adult & Alternative Education students were accepted at the following colleges, universities, training programs, and military branches: Alabama State University, Detroit Police Academy, Kaplan Institute of Technology, Henry Ford Community College, Jackson County Community College, Macomb County Community College, Oakland County Community College, Schoolcraft College, Washtenaw Community College, Specs Howard School of Media Arts, Wayne County Community College District, Wayne State University, Western Michigan University, the Air Force, Army, Marines, and Navy.
Two gradu
ates, a boy and a girl, from each high school’s graduating class were awarded the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Scholarship for best representing their class through the characteristics of President John F. Kennedy: leadership, scholarship, school and community service. The 2012 recipients, who each received a $1,000 college scholarship from the Board of Education, are:
Ferndale High School: Tirzah Ashmore and Brandon Davis
University High School: Jade McCord and Edward Jones
Alternative Education: Samantha Kesler and Christopher Davis
These students were nominated by community members, teachers, and family and selected by a committee to represent the Class of 2012.
