Local Author Fights Hopelessness with Humor
Mackinac Bridge Jesus Reading June 21st
(Ferndale 115 News, June 15, 2012)
Local author Charlotte Fisher will be reading excerpts from her new book, Mackinac Bridge Jesus, at State of the Art Framing & Gallery June 21, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Fisher calls the book a collection of “twisted, tender, tragic and comedic” essays of self-awakening. The stories are set in her home of state of Michigan, beginning with her childhood in the early ‘60s through today. The wide ranging subject matter includes embalming your relatives, bra shopping, Sandra Bullock, drinking too much and praying too little. And, of course, worrying about the ever-increasing size of her butt.
“I was going to title the book, ‘Gay, Alcoholic, Spiritually Bankrupt Unemployed Auto Worker: A Love Story,’” she said, “but I assumed that was taken. Instead, I named it after a character in the book.”
Fisher doesn’t want people to be put off by the “J” word.
“There are those who might see the name ‘Jesus’ and think the book is about religion,” she said. “Instead it is a story of my spiritual awakening, recovery and learning to live life on life’s terms.”
Audiences have laughed and cried at Fisher’s book readings. She believes the stories touch people regardless of age or gender, because the essays reflect the universal topics of hope, healing and forgiveness.
“Everyone has a mom or dad they’ve disagreed with,” she said. “Everyone’s felt out-of-place or marginalized or alone. Everyone has wronged someone and been wronged. The stories in this book show that through it all, love always prevails.”
State of the Art Framing & Gallery owners Veronica Lujic and Nicole Rafaill frequently host events supporting local artists and the downtown Ferndale business district.
“Ferndale’s culture is rich with curiosity,” said Rafaill. “People have a keen interest in all things creative and diverse. We celebrate self-expression in all forms and are honored to help share it with the community.”
