Julia Music likes to run. Being able to do it to raise money for her favorite nonprofits, like FernCare, is like a bonus. On June 24, 2012 Music and friends will be taking part in the Heart of Detroit run which helps out many charities in the area. Runners can designate where they want the proceeds to go.
Heart of Detroit gives lots of options for running, walking or wheelchairing. They have a 5k, 10k and 1 mile course. According to their website, “Heart of Detroit Run/Walk is an event designed to bring runners and walkers to downtown Detroit to raise money for local non-profits. The course is designed to “show off” downtown Detroit and it finishes inside Comerica Park, on the field! The “D” Home plate is the Finish Line and the after party is on the concourse with the Tiger’s merry-go-round running! There will be many Detroit surprises at this event, all aimed at raising money for hundreds of Detroit charities.”
“Registration is $32 which partially goes back to Ferncare. Our goal this year is to raise $1,000. If each of us can raise at least $100 we should make our goal! I hope to have more registered runners this year so we can surpass our goal,” Music said.
There are varying costs to run depending on the length of the race. Music is running the 5K, but runners and walkers can choose any distance. More information can be found on http://heartofdetroitrun.com.
When asked why she is running and getting others involved, Music said “Ferncare is an organization made up of volunteers who are amazingly generous with their time. I have no medical skills but there are some things I can do to help Ferncare succeed in their mission. I love to run in the summer so why not use what I love to help others?
“When people don’t have health insurance it is almost impossible for them to get the care they need. Ferncare fills this need by providing free care to their patients in a dignified way.
“For the first five years of running, I actually hated it. Suddenly, one day, I loved it. Running to help people get medical care that we should all have is an honor. It’s also an honor to support such a great group of volunteers. It is also a win situation for the run participants since we get a great workout with all of the support of thousands of runners.”
