Rotary Gives 2012 Scholarships

(C. Proxmire, Ferndale 115 News, June 1, 2012 ed)

Over a dozen students were honored for their hard work and dedication towards good citizenship with a reception by the Ferndale Rotary on May 24, 2012.  Three students, Tirzah Ashmore, Jonah Meltzer and Jade McCord were also rewarded with $2,000 scholarships.

Jerome Raska, President Elect of the Rotary and owner of Blumz by JR Designs, explained the application process and how each candidate came in for an interview.  He said that all of the students were winners.  “Everyone possesses such unique strengths,” he said.  “We know that all 14 of you will be successful.”

Ashmore is the youngest of eleven children.  And like her 10 elder siblings, she will be attending Hillsdale College.  She said that being active in student government, National Honors Society, Choir, SADD, volleyball and being President of her class has “kept me busy.  I stayed out of trouble.”  She will be studying Liberal Arts and hopes to choose a career where she can help people, like nursing, teaching, or social work.”

Meltzer is headed off to Michigan State to study Art and Music.  Raska said that an art opening for Meltzer may be in the works at Blumz, a business with a large gathering room in back that often gets used for community meetings, receptions and other events.

Ashmore, Meltzer, and McCord will receive half of their scholarships now, and half after their first semester, when they’re expected to come back to a Rotary meeting and talk about their college experience.

“We like being able to see the scholarships working,” said Rotary Member Carol Jackson.  The Ferndale Rotary hosts fundraisers throughout the year, which go almost exclusively toward the scholarships for local youth.

Jennifer Roosenberg was the guest speaker for May 24th awards.  Her inspiring speech on entrepreneurship and success can be found in its entirety here.
