Saturday, May 5, 2012 is a very important holiday that one Ferndale business owner anticipates will be the biggest day of the year. Brian Kelly of Detroit Comics (23333 Woodward Ave) says Free Comic Book Day typically brings people in from all over SE Michigan and beyond, looking for their free comic. It’s held on the first Saturday in May and is encouraged by the comic book distributors. The film industry also tends to take advantage of this weekend by releasing a superhero story. This year it’s The Avengers.
“It’s sort of an unofficial holiday for the business. Almost all comic book shops participate because it’s such a big thing,” Kelly said. He will be giving two free comics to adults and three to youngsters. “It helps get people excited about reading comics. I love to see parents bring in their kids and say ‘see, Spiderman’s not just some actor on a screen, he’s here in comic books. This is where superheroes come from.”
Not only does Free Comic Book Day provide a supportive atmosphere for parents to talk to their kids about comic books, there are other fun activities like Face-painting, and book signings by Joe Querio artist for Dark Horse Presents ‘Lobster Johnson’ and Glenn Barr of ‘Brooklyn Dreams.
Plus The Comic Book Syndicate will be interviewing people about their
free comic book day experience. You can also learn more about Detroit Comics at www.detroitcomics.com.
The event runs from 11am to 7pm on Saturday, May 5, 2012. For more info go to https://www.facebook.com/events/271899146238090/.
