Parking Permit Pilot Program Public Meeting Wednesday
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Ferndale 115 News, April 24, 2012)
The City is moving forward with a residential parking permit pilot program for residents on West Troy and West Saratoga. Parking on those streets is often an issue, with residents and visitors to Downtown Ferndale often struggling to find spots. There was a two hour time limit for parking on those streets, but now, as part of the program, residents can apply for a permit exempting them from the limitation.
A letter sent to residents said “While we recognize that this does not reconcile all the issues along your street, we can anticipate that this program will begin to ease some frustration and concern.” It also stated that there would be increased enforcement of the two hour rule, and that staff will be increasing their enforcement hours from 11am to 11pm.
Residents on W. Troy and W. Saratoga can go to City Hall to sign up or they can go online to www.ferndale-mi.com. The program begins May 1, 2012. Those signing up are required to have the completed application form, their driver’s license and a copy of their current State of Michigan vehicle registration. There is no fee for the first year of the program. At the end of one year the City will evaluate the program and make changes based on resident feedback.
An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 25 from 6pm-7pm at City Hall. Residents are welcome to come and ask questions and sign up for their permits.
“This is an issue we’ve been hearing about for a long time, and I’m glad to be moving forward with something. This is a good first step to solving the parking problem in the Downtown area,” said Councilperson Dan Martin, who was involved in the planning of this program along with the DDA and others from the City.
