Learn the Anatomy of a Criminal Case in Straight Talk on Feb. 27
(Lisa Schmidt press release, The Ferndale 115 News, 2/25/2012 not published in print ed.)
Lawyer Lisa J. Schmidt will present Straight Talk on Anatomy of a Criminal Case February 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ferndale Public Library.
This is the second in a four-part series of Straight Talks on the Law that are free to the public. The first was held January 23, 2012 and featured anti-bullying laws. Information from that talk can be found at www.schmidtlawservices.com/blog.
The talks feature a balanced and informational perspective on different legal topics important to the community. February’s talk will walk participants through typical criminal cases from investigation to appeal.
According to Lisa J. Schmidt, “It is unfortunate, but many citizens make poor decisions when faced with criminal charges that only make a bad situation worse. By knowing what to expect and simply asserting their rights, they can protect themselves from falling victim to the ‘efficiencies’ of the system.”
Presenter Lisa J. Schmidt is a trial lawyer whose firm Schmidt Law Services, PLLC, focuses on criminal defense, family law, and civil rights issues. When asked why she chose this topic she said, “I have seen too many clients who have ‘fallen on their swords’ by talking to police or consenting to various searches when it wasn’t in their best interests. If those clients had spoken to an attorney first or had known what to expect, their outcomes could have been greatly improved.”
Lisa J. Schmidt has been a criminal attorney in several counties and is a public defender in Oakland and Wayne Counties as well as representing private criminal clients. She urges the public to get informed about the criminal process. “You never know when you or someone you know may find yourself in an unexpected situation. Maybe you made a mistake or maybe you were improperly charged with something you didn’t do. It is better not to be caught unaware.”
Lisa J. Schmidt will give the hour-long talk on February 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ferndale Public Library, which will include a period for questions. The talk is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice, though Lisa J. Schmidt will be happy to schedule free consultations following the event to address specific issues.
Future Straight Talks on the Law are scheduled for:
April 23, 2012 on Medical Marijuana; and
May 21, 2012 on Child Custody.
All talks will be at 7:00pm at the Ferndale Public Library. There is no charge to attend.
