Taste of Ferndale Delicious as Always

(Crystal A. Proxmire, March 1, 2012 ed)

The Ferndale Community Foundation had their annual Taste of Ferndale event on Feb.21, 2012.  This gala allows guests the opportunity to sample food from many of Ferndale’s restaurants including Apple Fritter Donut Shop, Como’s, Dino’s Lounge, Grab-n-Go Sushi, Christine’s Cuisine, The Emory, Anita’s Kitchen, Pete’s Place, Howe’s Bayou, Torino, Rock City Pies, Peteet’s Cheesecakes, Garden Fresh Salsa, MiChigo Pizza, Treat Dreams, Assaggi Bistro, Chazzano Coffee and Rosie O’Grady’s.  The event helps the Community Foundation raise money for their grant programs.

Last year, The Taste of Ferndale raised over $9,000 through corporate sponsorship, ticket sales, and silent auction proceeds.  This year the Community Foundation hopes to raise over $12,000.  The money raised is used to provide grants to projects that benefit the community.  Groups like Ferndale Youth Assistance, FernCare, Michigan Fallen Heroes, Ferndale Historical Museum, Ferndale Beautification Commission, Peace Action of Michigan and Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency have all put Community Foundation grants to work.

This year’s event was held at Boogie Fever, a larger venue than in years past.  The Mardi Gras themed party also had music by the Metro Jazz Voices, a large silent auction, and a giving tree.  Local dignitaries attended including Mayor Dave Coulter, County Commissioner Craig Covey, Councilpersons Mike Lennon, Melanie Piana and Dan Martin. Republican State Representative Marty Knollenberg was also there, in town to shake hands as he campaigns to run for Oakland County Treasurer.

Delicacies included chicken shawarma from Anita’s, macaroni and cheese with chicken from Dino’s, fish patties from Howe’s Bayou, salted caramel ice cream from Treat Dreams, and hummus and salsa from Garden Fresh.
