Nominate Your Neighbor: Holiday Light Awards
(Crystal A. Proxmire, 12/1/2011)
As the snow begins to fall, Ferndalians are getting ready for the holiday season by decorating their homes with lights, garland, wreaths and other traditional décor. The tradition is encouraged by Ferndale’s Beautification Commission, who gives out holiday light awards each year.
At the Ferndale City Council meeting of Nov 28, Peggy Snow of the Beautification Commission announced the call for nominations. Residents are encouraged to contact the DPW (Department of Public Works) at 248-546-2519 to nominate themselves or their neighbors. Simply call and tell them the address, and the team of judges will check it out. Deadline to nominate is Dec. 15.
“We divide the city in 4 sections with 9 Mile and Woodward being the dividing line. We give an award in each section and one business award. The awards will be given out at the first council meeting in January,” Snow said after the meeting.
Last year’s winning homes, and all their brightly-lit beauty, can be seen in last year’s article “Holiday Light Awards Announced,” along with a video from Ferndale Cable.
In November, the Downtown Development Authority held its Light the Night event to celebrate the businesses that decorated their storefronts. Check out some Downtown Lights, along with a performance by the Music Messengers, in our previous article “Downtown Ferndale Lights the Night.” There is video there as well.
