Ferndale Schools Stand up to Bullying
(From Ferndale Schools Fanout, 11/18/2011)
Students at Ferndale High School, Ferndale Middle School, John F. Kennedy School and Coolidge Intermediate School participated in the global Stand Up to Bullying Day, November 18.
Students and staff wore special pink t-shirts with the above graphic, and those without the tees wore pink to support the day. In addition, students at FHS & FMS signed pledge sheets proclaiming they will stand up to bullying.
At FHS, students also signed banners in the Commons with the student pledge (see student pledge, right). Charlotte Oliver, FHS teacher said, “The enthusiasm for this day was fantastic. We can’t wait to do this again and continue our pledges and efforts to stand up to bullying.”
FMS also had a great day, and are planning at least three more “Stand Up” days. At Coolidge, students created paper hands, and attached them to an anti-bullying pledge board. At John F. Kennedy, students began the day by creating a paper heart, and then all together crumpled the heart into a ball, and lastly, unfolded the heart. The students were able to see the scars left in the paper, even though the shape remained whole. This symbolizes how the human heart feels after being bullied – while you might have received an apology, the scars of the actions can remain.
Student Pledge
“We’re all different, but I believe we all deserve respect. No one deserves to feel put down or threatened, physically or emotionally. I will join thousands across the world in signing a STAND UP Pledge Sheet and wearing a pink shirt on International STAND UP to Bullying Day. This will show victims of bullying I have their back if they need help and send a message to their bullies that I will not encourage or accept their behavior with my silence. Silence is participation and I refuse to be part of the problem. I am the solution and I am ready and willing to STAND UP to the best of my ability.”
