Rosie’s Scarecrow Auction Benefits Local Charities
(Crystal A. Proxmire)
On Oct. 26, 2010 dressed-up kids and (some) parents packed Rosie O’Grady’s at 279 W. 9 Mile for a fun-filled night of family games, treats, trick or treating, music and a chance to judge over a dozen scarecrows made by the employees to be auctioned off for charity.
The Pink Fund, Michigan AIDS Coalition, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Waggs and Wishes, and FernCare all benefited from the event which raised money by having customers bid on employee-created scarecrows. $1,300 was raised in total.
There were traditional scarecrows with pumpkin heads and silly outfits, but also some that were a little more scary – like the red-painted devil, the giant headless horsemen, or the strung-out pair of Cheryl Crow and Kid Rock.
The winner was The Headless Horseman created by Michael Fredenberg & Rachel Welsh.
A zombied-out Dora the Explorer shuffled about the room, giving children hugs, high-fives and candy while employees led kids in fun activities so the parents could enjoy some moments of their meals.
Owner Brian Kramer huddled his four children – Paris (who was an adorable Hanna Montana), Brian (disguised as Skeletor), John Ross (a fierce monster) and Paige (a Candy Corn witch), onto the bales of straw and piles of pumpkins on the restaurant’s outdoor patio for some festive holiday photos before sending them off to play with the dozens of other children inside.
Rosie’s has family nights each Wednesday, with a different pop culture kids character each week to keep the kids amused, and free food with a grown up’s purchase. Find out about this and other activities and dining options at http://www.4rosieogradys.com.
The Pink Fund has been formed to help women and men suffering from breast cancer
focus on healing, raising their families and returning to the workplace. The Pink Fund
will provide short-term financial aid during the brief period of active treatment and
recovery. Millions of dollars are being raised for research and programs for the
medically underserved, but despite this there are many families facing breast cancer
who urgently need financial help now. The Pink Fund provides this help. Find out more at www.thepinkfund.org.
Michigan AIDS Coalition’s mission is to “prevent HIV/AIDS in Michigan by promoting healthy lifestyles, providing and investing in evidence-based, innovative programs and through advocacy and education.” Find out more at http://michiganaidscoalition.org.
