Easy to see if you’re a Bone Marrow Match
Gift of Life Registry to collect swabs at Camp Casey Fest
(10/14/2011)
Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation will hold a donor recruitment drive to register potential bone marrow donors for its worldwide registry at Camp Casey Fest. The drive will benefit children who have been diagnosed with cancer. The event, scheduled on October 15 on East 9 Mile between Woodward and Bermuda, will run from 11 AM to 5 PM.
Children all over the United States are suffering from various blood cancers and are in need of bone marrow or blood stem cell transplants. This donor drive will benefit these patients who need to find their perfect, life-saving match. The drive is part of a larger fundraiser, Camp Casey Fest. The event is a chili cook-off and street fair featuring live music all day, and tickets are $10 if pre-purchased or bought at the event before 5 p.m. Tickets purchased after 5 p.m. on the day of the event are $15.
If you are between the ages of 18 and 60 and in general good health, you are eligible to be screened and join the worldwide registry for patients in need. A simple swab from the inside of your cheek is all it takes to determine if you are a match.
Gift of Life originated in 1991 when its founder, Jay Feinberg, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. Jay’s only hope of survival was a bone marrow transplant, and four years after his diagnosis, his match was found when the 60,000th person was tested at the very last recruitment drive held on his behalf. Today, Jay remains committed to saving the lives of others by increasing the number of bone marrow donors in the worldwide registry. Gift of Life is among the top international registries, with more than 189,000 potential volunteer donors, and is responsible for facilitating more than 2,300 bone marrow transplants.
