Conscious Discipline, Free Class for Parents
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Ferndale 115 News Wire, 10/4/2011)
Understanding is a great parenting tool. That’s why Roosevelt Principal Dina Rocheleau works so hard to teach parents about the principles of Conscious Discipline, and how those principles change both the parent and the child if taken to heart.
On Wednesday, Oct. 12 Rocheleau will be presenting a free parenting workshop called “Conscious Disciple” at Roosevelt Primary (2610 Pinecrest) from 6:30pm-8:30pm. The workshop is geared towards parents of elementary school aged children, but anyone is welcome to attend.
“Conscious Discipline has seven basic skills that adults need to use to constructively focus on behavior, discipline & natural occurring conflicts,” wrote Rocheleau in a recent newsletter to parents. “The skills promote a peaceful inner state in children. The first skill is Composure.
‘Composure helps children learn no one can make you angry without your permission. Composure assures adults are modeling the person you want children to be. The classroom structures we use to promote composure is the Safe Place, daily classroom meetings and breathing techniques to use. The value this provides is Integrity and its purpose is to help us remain calm & teach children how to behave as our brain functions optimally in a safe environment and anchors our daily learning!”
The workshop will show parents the value of being mindful as they act as role models and teachers for their children. It teaches the following:
~You are in charge. You can become the person you want to be.
~Power comes from within.
~You are responsible for your feelings and actions.
~Your choices impact others.
~You must teach others how to treat you. You cannot expect them to magically “know.”
~Conflict is a part of life. Mistakes offer opportunities to learn.
~Love is more powerful than fear.
~Cooperation is more effective than coercion.
There will be free childcare provided at the event and light refreshments will be served. “Conscious Disciple” is presented by Ferndale Youth Assistance. There is no cost for workshop, but registration is required. Call Ferndale Youth Assistance at 248-586-8700 to sign up.
