Power Outage Update

(Crystal A. Proxmire, 7/22/2011)

Half of the City remains without power as DTE works to repair the overworked, aging electrical system.  Attempts to do shift electricity from some neighborhoods to others in two-hour stints have been causing transformers to blow.  The DTE Website now says:  “Based on crew availability, the number of customers out and current weather conditions, we anticipate that your power should be restored between Fri Jul 22 2011 09:30 PM , and Fri Jul 22 2011 11:30 PM. ”

DTE offers credits for people who are without power for 16 hours or longer.  Here is the link to file your claim – http://www.dteenergy.com/residentialCustomers/problemsSafety/outageCenter/claims.html

Here is an update for Ferndale Schools programs and activities for Friday, July 22, 2011:
  • All activities are cancelled, with the exception of the programs listed below.
This includes all athletic activities and summer band/orchestra.
  • Summer School classes held at Coolidge Intermediate School will resume.
  • The Summer Food Program at Coolidge will also resume.
  • All other Ferndale Schools Summer School and Summer Food Programs are cancelled for Friday, July 22

The Kulick Community Center is open as a cooling station.  Visitors are welcome to come in and enjoy the air conditioning, get hydrated, and connect with others who are doing without. The Kulick Center is located at 1201 Livernois.  The center will remain open, even at night, until power is restored.

UPDATE:  at 3pm DTE was working on installing new equipment at the substation location near 9 Mile and Livernois.  See the picture below, courtesy of Ferndale 115 News reader Andy Didorosi.  The large box is a generator, and the substation parts are to the right:
