Hazel Park Author’s “Band Fags” Among Queer for Books SelectionsJust 4 Us

(Kelly Bennett, 7/17/2011)

The quickly growing Queer for Books Book Club has announced their book picks for July and August. On Saturday, July 23, the group will be discussing Band Fags! By Frank Anthony Polito, a book following Jack, a boy discovering the complicated nature of sexuality, through 1980s Hazel Park, Mich., as he grows up amidst Atari, Dallas and life in the school band. There will also be a special door prize for those who attend the discussion. On August 27, Queer for Books will be discussing Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin. The semi-autobiographical novel examines the role of the Christian Church in the lives of African-Americans as well as racism in pre-Civil Rights era America.

Those interested in attending the book club can request copies of the book at the Ferndale Public Library’s Reference Desk or from the library’s online catalog: http://catalog.tln.lib.mi.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/0/0/57/49?user_id=FERNDALEWEB
