Christine’s Cuisine Makes Dining in the D

(Crystal A. Proxmire, 7/7/2011)

For years Christine’s Cuisine has been a favorite independent restaurant, run by Chrystyna Adams who brings traditional Eastern European food into a mix of other ethnic and American dishes.  In the latest episode of Dining in the D, Adams explains the mix of food to host Chef Tom Keshishian by saying simply “I cook what I like.”  Hence the name Christine’s Cuisine.

The six and a half minute segment introduces the little café to the rest of southeast Michigan, and is part of a show that typically features four restaurants at a time.  The show is a new venture by a volunteer crew to help encourage people to visit locally-owned independent restaurants throughout the area.  In May an episode featuring Pete’s Place gave Chef Tom his first on-air taste of Ferndale.  Dining in the D airs on Wednesdays at 7:30pm on Channel 56/WTVS, and episodes are available any time on their website www.dininginthed.com

The show notes that Christine’s was featured in Rachael Ray’s magazine for the best pierogies in Michigan, and Chef Tom also praised Christine Cuisine’s homemade potato pancakes, saying they’re “like angels floating away here.”

Christine’s is located at 729 E. 9 Mile, in the shopping center between Hilton and the railroad tracks.  Christine is often there, cooking in the back while friendly waitresses serve the row of tables that line the deep narrow space.  In addition to the Ukranian-influenced pierogies and potato pancakes, the restaurant also serves giant burritos, burgers, soups, sandwiches, and even brunch on the weekends.

“The secret to my success is if you truly love doing what you do, it’s a law, you will be successful,” Adams tells Chef Tom.  And with local cross-promoting like Dining in the D, restaurants like Christine’s could benefit from increased out-of-town exposure and customers.
