(Lt. William Wilson, Ferndale Police, 6/15/2011)
A seventeen year old Royal Oak Township youth was arrested yesterday after he stole an Ipod from another kid’s backpack in Geary Park. School let out early yesterday, and students were playing in the park at about 1:30 when the thief was seen by a 15 year old girl who saw him go into another person’s back pack. The thief took the Ipod and pocketed it. The witness told him to put it back and he denied taking it. The girl then called to teens that the culprit stole the Ipod. Kids told him to return it, but he denied stealing anything and tried to walk away. A one teen called 911 and a group joined together and followed him as he walked to the 7/11 Store at 9 Mile / Pinecrest. There, the suspect tried to hide the Ipod in a trash can, but was observed doing this by an arriving police officer. A store employee also saw him throw the Ipod in the garbage can; she recovered it and gave it to the police officer.
The 17 year old was arrested. The officer then found that the thief had a second Ipod with him. Ownership of the second Ipod has not yet been determined.
A misdemeanor warrant for Larceny has been issued for the youth.
