Roosevelt Kids Give Green Grocery Bags to Western Market Customers

In order to spread community awareness about Earth Day, the students at Roosevelt Primary decorated paper grocery bags to give to Western Market customers. On Wednesday April 20, Western Market co-owner Steve Selvaggio went to the school to pick up the bags and talk with the youngsters about saving the planet.
Anne Kelly, a social worker at Roosevelt, said she is “so proud” of the students and their work making Roosevelt a certified Green School. “We are now up to ‘emerald’ status in the Green Schools program,” Kelly said. “The students have to accomplish projects in order to earn points and this is one of the projects they decided to do. Every student in the school made a bag – and there are over 480 students. They wanted to come up with something that they could give to the community, and this seemed like a great way to give them to a lot of people.”
Ms. Somer’s third grade class took the lead on this and other green initiatives. “The kids go to all the classrooms each week and collect the recyclables,” she said. “They also got the whole school involved in Earth Day.” Some Roosevelt students went in the morning to tour SOCCRA’s Recycling Facility.
Selvaggio was happy to see so many kids excited about Earth Day. The youngsters showed off bags they made, as well as pictures and story books about the planet. Western Market is a family-owned fresh market that is a staple in the Ferndale community. They also pride themselves on their ever-increasing focus on products that are both green and local.
“Buying products made here in Michigan helps the local economy and it cuts down on energy used in transportation,” Selvaggio said. The store has an extensive recycling program, and is a highly-anticipated participant in local green activities including the Annual Green Cruise – http://www.ferndale115.com/20100815green.html. They also carry a good selection of organic produce and natural and organic meats, along with other environmentally-conscious products.
Back at the store, customers loved the hand-decorated bags. For many it was a reminder about Earth Day, which is celebrated around the world on April 22 each year. The tradition began in 1970. Here in Ferndale, the City celebrates with Green Week, a series of events coordinated by the Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission.
