Cupcakes are Coming! 500 Free April 21 at new Cupcake Station
(Crystal A. Proxmire, 4/20/2011)
Ferndale has been buzzing with curiosity about the newest business to occupy 301 W. 9 Mile. What is this mysterious new Cupcake Station, hidden behind the brown-papered windows where Strawberry Moon used to be?
The Ferndale 115 News trekked out to Birmingham to find out. That’s where best friends Kerry Johnson and Tom Holleman opened up their first Cupcake Station in August 2006. The Ferndale location will be fourth in their growing empire of sweetness. Besides Birmingham, Cupcake Station’s gourmet cupcakes can be enjoyed in Plymouth and Ann Arbor. Plus they are looking for people to open up franchise locations.
Their grand opening in Ferndale will be Thursday, April 21 at 11am. The first 500 customers will get a free cupcake.
The Cupcake Station offers a large variety of specialty cupcakes made fresh each day from scratch. Some of the unique flavors include:
~Drumstick – Marshmallow vanilla cake frosted with creamy marshmallow buttercream rolled in peanuts, drizzled with chocolate and a waffle cone piece on top
~Stations Samoa – Very moist vanilla bean cake filled and frosted with their signature buttercream, rolled in toasted coconut and drizzled with caramel and dark chocolate
~Banana Split – Banana cake filled with fresh bananas, strawberry filling, frosted with buttercream, topped with dark chocolate, walnuts and a cherry on top
~Vegan varieties
There is also a gift area, with cupcake-related t shirts, magnets, greeting cards, cupcake holders, gifts and more. They even make a gourmet dog cupcake for dogs.
Ferndale resident Janine Souther has been hired to manage the 9 Mile/Allen Cupcake Station. “I’m so excited,” she said. “I’ll be able to ride my bike to work, and be right there for all the festivals.”
Souther moved to Ferndale last year. “It’s been amazing,” she said. “I’ve done more fun things in the last year than I can remember. Living in Ferndale just makes you want to get out and get involved.”
