The contest is held nationwide, and locally Salem/South Lyon and Novi are competing. Although they do have a lucky number of titles already – 115 – patrons of the Library can benefit for having the entire collection, which has 1,600. The “For Dummies” series features expert writers who break down specific topics so that nearly anyone can understand them.
The 115 Dummies books in Library’s collection, include: DJing, Energy Efficient Homes, Baby Singing, Small Business, Science Fair Projects, Catholicism, Adoption, Jewish Cooking and Robot Building. Patrons can also download about a dozen more Dummies ebooks from Overdrive, which is accessible from http://www.facebook.com/l/76961-xMMtFtAE3kknXgw4qZftw/ferndale.lib.mi.us/.
The ten most regularly-checked-out books in the current collection are:
-RESUMES FOR DUMMIES
-CATHOLICISM FOR DUMMIES
-KNITTING FOR DUMMIES
-PERENNIALS FOR DUMMIES
-MAGIC FOR DUMMIES
-DRAWING FOR DUMMIES
-ACCOUNTING FOR DUMMIES
-PERSONAL FINANCE FOR DUMMIES
-ALGEBRA II FOR DUMMIES
-STARTING AN EBAY BUSINESS FOR DUMMIES
Interim Library Director Ed Burns and his staff are always looking for ways to expand the Library’s selection and services. Because the Dummies Contest requires Facebook users to “like” the page, Burns is encouraging everyone who cares about the Library to do so on the Ferndale Dummies Facebook page.
“Mostly we’ve sent out Facebook notices to our friends and fans. I solicited votes from a library listserv of which I’m a member. I’m going to put a poster up in the library,” he said. “And hopefully readers of The Ferndale 115 will like the page too.” At the time of publishing (Wednesday 9pm) the page had 257 “likes.”
Burns said the series is popular among Library users, and that he has even used some of the bright-yellow colored reference guides. “I found the HTML for Dummies very helpful when I was trying to learn website building. I like the step by step instructions. That’s the way I think.” He said. Burns also joked that he might start reading “Anger Management for Dummies.”
