Students at Roosevelt Primary School enjoyed guest readers on March 18, 2011 for March-is-Reading Month. Guests included Ferndale Police Chief Tim Collins, Chef Jeremy Burean, Director of Technology Melissa Auchter & Coolidge Principal Dr. Kevin Brockberg.

Board members Katrina Collins and Darcey McLaughlin read, as well as FHS counselor Gayle Minneci, FHS Assistant Principal Lisa Williams, Elementary Curriculum Coordinator Pauline Nagle, Human Resources Manager Amy Crandall, Enrollment Secretary Robin Major, Pupil Accounting Secretary Sandra Dukhie and more.

The event gave students a chance to meet successful grown ups and learn how important reading is to them.

“Since I don’t have children, it is important for me to once in a while connect with kids, and the youngsters at Roosevelt are always fun and charming and energetic.  I like the students there, who are diverse, including kids of Latino, black, white, Asian, Arabic and mixed backgrounds.  I spoke to three classes, totaling about 50 kids.” said Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey.

“I read three books including a Dr. Suess book on The Fox in Sox, and another book about a farmer and farm animals called Storm is Coming.  The kids were 3rd graders and asked me lots of questions, and were most interested in whether I had met Obama, who is a real hero to them; I have not met him.”

Having guest readers is a tradition for Ferndale Schools.

City-wide, Ferndale grown-ups and youngsters are taking part in Ferndale Reads, a month of reading events put on by The Ferndale Library.  Read all about it at:  http://oaklandcounty115.com/2011/03/12/getting-lost-in-ferndale-reads/.
