Treat Dreams Announces 115th Flavor ~ The Ferndale 115 Brain Freeze

(Crystal A. Proxmire, 2/20/2011)

Since opening on Aug. 13, 2010, Treat Dreams at 22965 Woodward has been amazing customers with their crazy ice cream flavors like Coconut Chi Tea, Chicken and Waffles, Pistachio Wasabi and Purple Yam.  Available next week will be their 115th specialty flavor – The Ferndale 115 Brain Freeze.

The Ferndale 115 Brain Freeze was handmade by Ferndale 115 News Editor and Publisher Crystal A. Proxmire, with Treat Dreams owner Scott Moloney walking her through the relatively simple process.

Every ice cream, except for the vegan selections, starts with a pre-packaged homogenized ice cream base which is basically cream, sugar and stabilizer. It looks a lot like milk, only thicker.

To that they added ground up Smarties candy and a dash of citrus.  The mix was then poured into an industrial-strength ice cream maker which churns it while infusing air and freezing it.

After only ten minutes in the machine, the ice cream comes out with the consistency of soft-serve, and – with the help of employee Cheryl Allen –  Nerds candy were sprinkled in.  Then after just 8 more hours in the walk-in freezer, The Ferndale 115 Brain Freeze was ready to be enjoyed.

“The Smarties are really sweet and the nerds are a little bit sour so it works out,” said Moloney’s ten-year-old daughter Payton, who was one of the first to try a sample.  “I really like it!”

The flavor is a tribute to all the “Smarties” who read The Ferndale 115 News, and the “Nerds” like Proxmire who feel welcomed here in Ferndale.

Moloney has been singing the praises of the City as well, and working hard to collaborate with other businesses in the City.  For Valentine Vodka, he created a Lemon Drop flavor, a Strawberry Balsmic and a White Russian.  The WAB (Woodward Avenue Brewers) was treated to Pumpkin Ale, Vanilla Porter and Root Beer Float flavors.  Western Market’s fresh-squeezed orange juice was the basis for Treat Dreams’ Orange Juice Sorbet.  Pinwheel Bakery had Cinnamon Roll flavor.  Mae’s had Blueberry Pancake, and flavor creations are in the works for The Fly Trap and another from Western Market.

This weekend Treat Dreams revealed their 12 most popular ice creams for their first 6 months in business.  The winners, which should all be available for the next week or so, are…

12.  Chocolate Covered Potato Chip

11.  Holy Canoli

10.  Lemon Basil

9.  Raspberry Lemon Bar

8.  Red Velvet Cupcake

7.  Pure Michigan

6.  Bannanas Foster

5.  Sweedish Fish

4.  Mound Road

3.  Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter

2.  Mexican Chocolate

1.  Salty Caramel

So far there has only been one mistake, which was Moloney’s attempt at making Salt and Vinegar ice cream.  Some other great new flavors include Maddi’s Green Dream and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Chocolate Chip, both made by an 11-year-old girl through The Childrens Leukemia Foundation.

The Foundation also teamed up with Treat Dreams to have a four-year-old girl design her ideal cupcakes, which are also still available.  Cupcakes, chocolate covered pretzels, sandwiches, soups, gourmet popcorn, cupcakes, dessert bars and other pastries are all some of the treats at the unique Downtown Ferndale eatery.
