VIEW: State Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton Says Budget Cuts Hurt

Last week, Gov. Rick Snyder met with both chambers of the Michigan Legislature to announce massive cuts to our cities, schools and our most vulnerable citizens. I am against this budget proposal — which would give more than $1 billion in tax credits to the business community while unfairly cutting benefits to our seniors — because it unfairly imposes the burden on those that need our help the most: children, seniors and the working poor.

A Taste of the Community Foundation

Palmer is one of a dozen citizens who serve on the Board of the Community Foundation as they prepare for their grand annual fundraising spectacular The Taste of Ferndale. The taste-fest takes place on March 8, 2011 from 6-9pm at Via Nove Restaurant. Ferndale has proven to be a strong consumer of environmentally-conscious products, according to local food service products business Michigan Green Safe Products. Matt Naimi, General Manager of Michigan Green Safe, says that Ferndale is one of the best places to do business in, with Royal Oak, Ann Arbor and Midtown in Detroit also providing them with a good base of customers.

Within a week of the announcement that Motor City Pride is moving from Downtown Ferndale to Hart Plaza in Detroit, Ferndalians are engaging in constructive dialogue about the move. Some hope for alternative events in Ferndale, some are calling for a boycott of the event, while others speak of ways to share the Pride throughout the area.
