When Angela Counts went to the emergency room with chest pain last May, she was 35 years old with no medical insurance. Although she said she “knew” something serious wrong, getting doctors to take her seriously was just the first of many uphill battles for the young mother of three.
Earlier this week, Fire Marshal Brian Batten presented Ferndale resident Terry Bowlus an award of $2,000 from the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee for his testimony that led to the conviction of an arsonist.

I am against this budget proposal — which would give more than $1 billion in tax credits to the business community while unfairly cutting benefits to our seniors — because it unfairly imposes the burden on those that need our help the most: children, seniors and the working poor.

Within a week of the announcement that Motor City Pride is moving from Downtown Ferndale to Hart Plaza in Detroit, Ferndalians are engaging in constructive dialogue about the move. Some hope for alternative events in Ferndale, some are calling for a boycott of the event, while others speak of ways to share the Pride throughout the area. Ferndale Recreation hosted this year’s Sweetheart Date Night on Friday, February 11 at the Gerry Kulick Community Center. The recreation department paired up with the Emory to offer guests a special, Sweetheart Date Night menu for a delicious dinner prior the dance. Many couples took advantage of the special and enjoyed a wonderful dinner beforehand.
