BURGLARS ARRESTED – 10-2945

On Thursday, December 23rd at about 10:30 a.m. burglars broke into a house on Allen between Fielding and Gardendale. Because of telephone calls made by neighbors who were suspicious of the suspect’s activities, police were able to respond while the crime was in progress. A Ferndale officer arrived to the area in time to see the burglars fleeing the scene in a vehicle. He followed the car into Detroit where three b/m’s abandoned their vehicle and fled into the neighborhood on foot.

Police from Ferndale, Hazel Park, Detroit, and Warren cordoned off an area and searched for the suspects. Eventually, three suspects were caught in yards in the area of Norfolk / Warrington. One chased down while running, one was found hiding in a garbage can, and another broke into a garage where police found him hiding.

Police are investigating to determine how many of a recent rash of burglaries in the area these same suspects may be responsible for. The investigation also continues to determine who else may have been committing burglaries with these individuals.

SUSPECT 1: Varsalles  Vadel Phillips, B/M 17 yrs.

SUSPECT 2: Timothy James Russell, b/m, 18 yrs.

SUSPECT 3: Markaylow Elijajuan Ewing, b/m, 18 years.

Magistrate Brennan arraigned the suspects who were all charged with Home Invasion 2nd Degree.  Phillips and Ewing are being held on  $100,000 cash/surety bond, Russell is being held on $50,000 cash/surety bond.

CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT: This case is another example of citizens getting involved and helping to catch criminals. We urge people that observe any potentially suspicious or criminal activity to call police immediately. Many times people want to be sure in their own minds that a crime is occurring, then they phone. This delay often results in the criminals escaping.

FLEEING SUSPECTS INJURED: 10-2950

On 12/24/10 at about 1:15 a.m., Ferndale police responded to a report of two black males stealing salt from Western Market on 9 Mile in Ferndale. A Ferndale officer spotted the suspect vehicle (1996, Blue Chevy) near 8 Mile / Allen. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle that fled into Royal Oak Twp, then went s.b. on Indiana into Detroit. The suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and crashed into a house on Pembroke St. in Detroit.

Both suspects (in their mid fifties) were injured and transported to the hospital for treatment where they were admitted.  Police will turn the matter over to the prosecutor’s office for a determination of charges.
