Fire Consumes Hazel Park Home
(Crystal A. Proxmire)
Just after 8pm on Dec. 22, 2010 Ferndale Police and Fire Departments were called to 23123 Berdeno Ave. in Hazel Park to assist the neighboring fire department with a home engulfed in flames. By 8:30 the entire back of the house was ablaze as neighbors stood around watching the firemen do their work.
As they shot a thick stream of water through the front door, a plume of black smoke and also steam, rose into the air as the house gave off a sizzling, snapping kind of sound. When the water stopped, the flames shot up again, spiking over the roofline several times before the water finally subdued it to a more manageable level. The house seems completely destroyed.
The couple that lived in the house took refuge with a neighbor. They had struggled the past few months with an old furnace, said a woman who lived a couple houses away. She was going from cluster to cluster of onlookers, making sure everyone knew to keep their eyes open for a missing Russell Terrier named Jack. She also said two family cats are missing.
The Daily Tribune reports today that anyone wishing to help the family can contact The Hazel Park Fire Department at (248) 542-6000.
