Signature Tattoo Makes its Mark in Ferndale

Ribbon cuttings in Ferndale are frequent and well-attended. New businesses are customarily greeted by members of the Downtown Development Authority and the Ferndale Area Chamber. Chamber members get to use the giant pair of scissors to cut a big red bow, and neighbors often turn out to welcome them as well. But one business opening had an honor that hadn’t occurred in Ferndale before.
Signature Tattoo opened on Oct. 30, 2010 first by cutting the ribbon, and then by giving the Mayor of the city some ink.
Craig Covey, who will be leaving his post as Mayor at the end of December so that he can be sworn is as County Commissioner, showed his undying love for the City by letting the guys at Signature mark him permanently with a large fern tattoo on the underside of his right forearm.
Dan Rick, a tattoo artist who lives in Utica, did the honors. “He’s doing a great job,” Covey said. “Doesn’t hurt a bit.” Covey said he chose a fern because he loves the city so much. “It’s really like a part of me,” he said.
Signature Tattoo was able to open because of recent changes to the City Code of Ordinances that now allow for tattoo parlors. Covey remembers the days when things like dancing and therapeutic massage were illegal in the City. “Those kinds of businesses are helping to make our Downtown vibrant. It’s the type of thing that we do in Ferndale to make quality of life better for everyone” Covey said.
Co-owner Mark Heggie said he’s glad that Ferndale has allowed tattooing, and that everyone has been welcoming. “We’re hoping to be good neighbors here and set an example. Some tattoo shops aren’t very professional, but we take what we do very seriously.”
He added that he chose Ferndale because “it’s a community that really takes care of each other.”
“I was impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the staff at Signature tattoo. And the co-owner Dan Rick did an excellent job with my new fern leaf tattoo, which was fairly quick and not painful.”
