Fashion by Whitney: House of Chants
(Whitney Lawren, Fashion Editor)
If you want to add an artistic appeal to your wardrobe, then HOUSE OF CHANTS (210 W. 9 Mile Rd, 248.414.9170) is the place to shop. Located in downtown Ferndale since 1995, owner Linda Robbins has the latest trends if you have a more artsy and contemporary soul, or if your just someone who wants to add a little spice to your attire. Located at 210 W. Nine Mile Road, men and women between the ages of 20-50 can shop here without breaking their budget. The boutique has clothes, hats, scarves, and accessories ranging from earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings, sunglasses and wallets made from all recycled material.
Linda’s mother, who is a Buddhist was her inspiration for the name HOUSE OF CHANTS. She influenced her to open up her own boutique and “try something new.” Although Linda had no professional background in fashion she did live in NYC for ten years and Japan for one year, two of the world’s greatest fashion capitals. With a degree in art history & classics from Hunter College in NYC and Linda’s love of art, she felt that having an artistic background would be an easy transition to the fashion industry.
One thing that catches your eye when you walk into Linda’s boutique is how the garments and accessories are arranged. You can definitely tell that it was art-inspired from the way the belts are criss-crossed on the table to the displays in the front window. Robbins calls the window display “textile laser installation,” and it was done by a local artist named Christin Richards.
Linda buys from everywhere in the US from east to west coast for her boutique, she also specializes in local designers. One local designer in particular that she has sold their merchandise in her store for over 10 years is a husband and wife whose brand is called Eugenia Paul. They have women’s clothing and accessories which are very chic and reasonable. Linda also has Mandingo Rockstar cuffs that she sells from a local designer.
Running your own boutique alone can be a bit of a challenge but Linda loves being her own boss. She likes making quick decisions about the business, being one on one with clients, and purchasing merchandise that she likes.
House of Chants’ hours of operation are Tuesday & Wednesday 11-7, Thursday & Friday 11-8, Saturday 11-7, and Sunday 12-5.
